TYPES OF THERAPY

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy   (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a practical and effective form of therapy. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours, and is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings and behaviours are interconnected. By changing our thoughts, we can positively influence our emotions and actions. Our highly-trained therapists will work with you to develop coping skills and strategies that you can use to manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

CBT is recommended by NICE Guidelines for depression, low mood and a range of anxiety disorders, including;

  • Post-traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Panic and Agorophobia

  • Social anxiety disorder

  • Health anxiety disorder

  • Phobias

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can also be helpful to treat other difficulties such as low self-esteem, stress, sleeping problems, adjusting to physical health problems, difficult life events and coping with traumatic experiences.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy   (IPT)

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited and structured approach to the treatment of depression. The fundamental clinical task of IPT is to help you to learn to link mood with your relationships with others, and to recognise that by appropriately addressing interpersonal situations you can improve both your relationships and depression.

Typically, IPT focuses on one of four areas of difficulty that are having a significant impact on your depression symptoms. These are:

  • conflict with another person

  • life changes that affect how you feel about yourself and others

  • unresolved grief

  • difficulty in starting relationships or keeping relationships going in a satisfying way

You and your therapist will work together over the initial sessions to decide which area is going to be most helpful for you to focus on.

A course of IPT may involve 8-16 sessions. Its overall aims are to reduce the symptoms of depression and to improve the quality of your relationships with others.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy  (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is third wave CBT approach designed to help individuals increase psychological flexibility. It is based on the idea that suffering is a normal part of the human experience and that trying to avoid or eliminate negative thoughts and emotions only leads to further distress and suffering.

Instead, ACT encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and emotions, and learn to live in the present moment while focusing on their personal values and moving towards actions that provide fulfilment. ACT uses mindfulness techniques to detach from negative thoughts, in order to change our relationship to negative thinking and feeling.

Compassion Focussed Therapy  (CFT)

Compassion-focussed therapy is an effective approach that can help people struggling with various emotional difficulties. This approach can help develop greater self-compassion and reduce feelings of shame and self-criticism. With this approach, you can learn new ways of thinking and behaving that can lead to greater happiness and wellbeing.
